Materials Company Gains Clarity and Confidence in Their MuleSoft Deployment and Direction

A leading construction materials company faced a critical question: should they invest further in their MuleSoft environment and use? Answering this question became a priority when they suspected their deployment needed improvement and their integrations were failing, including routinely bringing their ERP system down.

The company wanted answers to common questions:

  • Is our MuleSoft environment adequately deployed and configured?
  • Is the company ready for an API-led approach for new system development?
  • What are the areas of our MuleSoft environment that need immediate attention?
  • Is our environment capable of handling future integration demands?

Even though MuleSoft had been utilized for a while, the customer described themselves as “green” and “inexperienced.”  The organizations’ leadership recognized their deployment may have issues but needed help assessing and analyzing their current situations and future opportunities.

The company wanted confidence in their MuleSoft deployment and their decision to move forward with the MuleSoft platform.

Solution

Big Compass proposed and delivered a MuleSoft Value Accelerator, a tightly scoped assessment that carefully evaluates a customer’s MuleSoft environment and provides a prioritized scorecard with actionable guidance.

The Value Accelerator project evaluated the following elements: Process and Governance, Security, Integration Architecture, Operations, Capacity, and Development.

These elements were evaluated relative to the expected future demand of the environment and the company’s resource capability and limitations. The Value Accelerator scope also included known MuleSoft deployment issues and an analysis for opportunities to utilize the Microsoft Azure platform.

Deliverables from the Accelerator included detailed recommendations for:

  • Standardization on the MuleSoft platform for iPaaS
  • Strengthening development processes by improving DevOps and CI/CD
  • Establishing an architecture for API security and integration scalability

The recommendations were prioritized to align with the current and future needs of the company.

Results

The customer has a clear vision for the future integration architecture and the expanding role of MuleSoft within the company’s systems.

Based on the recommendations of the Value Accelerator, the customer was able to develop a business case for further investment in the MuleSoft iPaaS solution and allocation of resources.

The customer appreciated the simple Red-Yellow-Green visualization of the recommendations as it provided clear guidance on what needed immediate attention and what could potentially wait.

With a prioritized and detailed set of focus areas and actions, the organization can confidently plan to address their near-term issues and build for the future.
